Welcome to Chapel Hill. You’re all moved into your dream home. You’ve finally unpacked the last box – you know, besides the one you threw in the crawlspace because you didn’t feel like it. (It’s okay. I get it.) Now what? How do you celebrate when you don’t know your way around town? Well, why not start with these suggestions?

Go down to Gimghoul Castle.

Yes, you read correctly. The castle is located on the east side of UNC Chapel Hill. Formerly known as Hippol Castle, it was built starting in the 1920s, but it has long been associated with the secretive Order of Gimghoul. This group is said to be made up of UNC alumni of note, but not much is known about it. Weirder still is the legend surrounding the area – that 18-year-old Peter Dromgoole was buried here in a shallow grave after losing a duel almost 200 years ago.

Eat in or take out Amante’s Gourmet Pizza.

Words escape me regarding this pizza, but I’ll try to describe it. Mouth-watering certainly comes to mind. Go in and try a Pollo Resistance or Jamaican Jerk. Or, if you’re feeling more like a night in, order some.

Take a stroll through the North Carolina Botanical Garden.

In addition to the curated exhibits, you can explore a lot of natural beauty at UNC’s Botanical Garden. It’s home to the Battle Park, where you can see a performance at the Forest Theatre among forests that predate European settlement in the area. You can also take a tour of the Coker Arboretum, founded as an outdoor classroom for the study of trees, shrubs, and vines – or do a self-guided walking tour.

Catch a movie at the Varsity Theater.

The theater was built in 1927 and has always been home to a movie theater since. Its interior and exterior are intended to retain that “old time” feel, bringing excitement back to seeing a film.

Get a drink at He’s Not Here.

This classic bar and UNC favorite opened in 1972. Legends surround the name, but they all center around the idea that someone calling the bar would have their questions answered with “He’s Not Here.” You’ll also be able to say that you went to a bar that’s been visited by the Travelocity gnome.
